This week's review is a beer from Vermont. Encore is part of Magic Hat's I.P.A. on Tour collection.
There are four different styles of IPAs, each one using a different
combination of hops. The label shows a hand holding a lighter with Encore spelled in the flame and like all Magic Hat bottles, a fortune under the cap. Encore mixes the American wheat ale with a classic
IPA. I've been on the wheat kick lately so this was right up my alley.
Encore pours a copper, burnt orange color. I like the smell right off the bat. Grapefruit is in the forefront along with a slight lemon aroma. The first sip has some bitterness, but quickly goes away with a sweetness which comes from the wheat aspect. It is a different flavor than a normal IPA, almost an IPA light. The alcohol content is high enough that this beer can do some damage, but is light enough where you can have more then a few. I really liked the flavor in this beer. The wife even enjoyed one and she is not a fan of hoppy beers, but likes the wheats. This might sound like a weird comparison, but it reminds me of an Arnold Palmer, (combination of iced tea and lemonade for those of you that don't know). Don't ask me why, it just does. The interesting combo of wheat and hops is something I will be looking to explore further, maybe even get the wife to try some hoppier brews.
